Sania begins Australian Open feat today

India's Sania Mirza today kicked off India's campaign in the 100th edition of the Australian Open Tennis tournament that began in Melbourne today. Sania, who needs to improve her ranking for a direct entry into the London Olympics, is now playing Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria in the opening round of the Women's Singles event. Sania was a set down, when reports last came in. She lost the first set 4-6, with the second set in progress.Sania is the lone Indian in the Singles section, as ace tennis player Somdev Devvarman had, earlier, opted to sit out of this first Grand Slam tournament of 2012.Somdev is suffering from a shoulder injury.In Men's Doubles, Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna will represent India, with Leander Paes paring with Radek Stepanek of Czechoslovakia. In the Women's Doubles Sania will pair with Russian Elena Vesnina.
