Sangma stresses on ‘Look South’ policy

Former Lok Sabha speaker P A Sangma during his recent visit to Bangladesh has stressed on a ‘Look South’ policy looking at the possible trade transactions with Bangladesh instead of the much hyped Centre’s policy on Look East which is aimed at improving trade relations with South East Asian countries.

Sangma during his tour of Bangladesh from June 18 to 25 met the Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and exchanged ideas on how a Look South policy can be more viable to the Northeast considering the proximity several Northeast states have with Bangladesh than the present Look East policy.

Sangma, in a statement issued here today said that though the Government of India’s policy is Look East, as far as Northeast in general and Meghalaya in particular is concerned, emphasis should be on Look South.
Besides Meghalaya, the major Northeast states which share border with Bangladesh include Assam, Tripura, and Mizoram.

Though Meghalaya exports coal and lime stones to Bangladesh, the absence of better road, rail, air and sea connectivity between the Northeast and Bangladesh stands as hurdles to improve the trade .
