Sangma resigns from primary membership of NCP to fight Presidential election

Former Lok Sabha Speaker P A Sangma has resigned from the primary membership of NCP. NCP chief Sharad Pawar told reporters on Wednesday that the party has accepted Sangma's resignation. He said that the party will inform the Speaker of Meghalaya Assembly about Sangma's resignation from the NCP.

The party had warned Mr. Sangma that action will be taken against him, if he chose to break ranks. The NCP has supported UPA candidate and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee for the Presidential post.

AIADMK and Biju Janta Dal have supported P A Sangma's candidature for the top constitutional post. The BJP led NDA is yet to take its final view on the issue. Earlier in the day, NDA convenor Sharad Yadav said that discussions are going on for finalising its Presidential candidate. Talking to reporters in New Delhi, Mr. Yadav said various political parties are being consulted on the matter.
