The former leader of the southern rebels in Sudan, Salva Kiir, has been sworn-in as President of the semi-autonomous southern Sudan, after his landslide victory in elections last month. The move is consequence of peace deal which ended 21 years of civil war. This is the first time in history of the people of south Sudan to have a democratically-elected president of the government of southern Sudan. The election was Sudan’s first vote in 24 years after years of civil war between the north and the south. It also forms part of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) signed between the north and south. The accord effectively ended the civil war.<br/>
