Bangladesh Home minister Sahara Khatun on Wednesday warned that stern action will be taken against anyone indulging in violence during the countrywide general strike called by the BNP and its allies tommorow. Talking to reporters at her office in Dhaka, Sahara Khatun said that mobile courts will be deployed to try the offenders on the spot during the hartal period. Meanwhile the main opposition party the BNP which called for the countrywide dawn to dusk strike has reduced the hartal period by one hour. The party decided to enforce the countrywide shutdown to protest against the increase in fuel prices, alleged scam in the stock market, and detention of opposition activists. The countrywide hartal comes just two days after the violent protests by the BNP’s ally the Jamaat -E Islami on Monday. The protest demonstrations were marked by pitched battles between law enforcers and activists of the Jamaat -E- Islami during which several vehicles were burnt and nearly hundred people were injured. More than three hundred activists of the Jamaat -E-Islami including its Acting Secretary General General ATM Azharul Islam have been remanded in various cases related to the violence. Monday’s protests were organized demanding the release of Jamaat-E Islami chief Matiur Rahman Nizami and several other top leaders of the party who are in jail facing trial for their alleged involvement in war crimes during the 1971 liberation war.
