The Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh today assured the Lok Sabha that the safety of nuclear plants in the country is the Government's top priority. He added that an immediate technical review of India's atomic plants has been ordered to check if they can withstand the impact of large natural disasters such as Tsunamis and earthquakes. Dr. Singh asserted New Delhi is in constant touch with the International Atomic Energy Agency, Japanese Atomic Industrial Forum and world Association of Nuclear operators and extended India's help in relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction process. He said that Navy is on stand-by to send its ships to Japan as a part of such an exercise. Dr Manmohan Singh announced an immediate dispatch of 25000 blankets for the Tsunami hit people of Japan. Making a suo moto statement in the Lok Sabha today, Dr Singh said all Indians in Japan are safe and only 70 of them are living in shelters and New Delhi is constantly monitoring the situation. AIR correspondent reports that,The statement has addressed the concerns being expressed on the nuclear safety by the Indian community after the threat of a nuclear disaster in Japan in the wake of a natural calamity. Dr.Singh in his statement dealt at length on the safety of nuclear power reactors to put at rest all the reports in this direction, saying safety audit of the 20 nuclear reactors has been completed. It is heartening to note that Kakrapar Atomic Power Station after earthquake in Bhuj in 2002 and Madras Atomic Power Station after Tsunami in 2004 worked normally. With work underway to further strengthen Nuclear Safety Regulatory Authority, it is expected that more steps will be on the anvil to strengthen safety of nuclear plants.Meanwhile BJP today urged the Government to make safety of nuclear plants as its priority. Party Spokesman Shahnawaz Hussein also called for taking steps to meet any exigency in case a nuclear power plant develops a snag or there is threat of radiation.The Finance Minister today made a case for raising the Tax GDP ratio to a reasonable level of 12-14 per cent to enhance the government's capability to fund social sector schemes.In his reply to General Budget 2011-12 in Rajya Sabha, Mr.Pranab Mukherjee said the share of direct taxes, which is non-inflationary, should be more in the kitty.Giving details,he said,share of direct taxes in overall tax revenue has been growing.He added, it was 60 per cent during 2009-10.For 2010-11, Revised Estimate indicates direct tax contribution to revenue basket at 57 per cent while Budget Estimate of 2011-12 also pegs it at the same level.On economic growth,Mr. Mukherjee said, GDP growth was 8 per cent in 2009-10 and 8.6 per cent as per the latest report of the Chief Statistical Officer for 2010-11.He observed that based on these figures, he had projected a growth of 9 per cent for 2011-12.Mr. Mukherjee also said that the government will follow fiscal consolidation despite volatility in crude oil price and commodity prices.
