Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti calls for introduction of FDI in agri sector of NE region

Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti on Tuesday called for introduction of Foreign Direct Investment in the agriculture sector of the North East region. Speaking at the ASSOCHAM summit on"Cold Chain Summit -North Eastern Region, 2016" in Shillong today, the Union Minister said that said that move to bring FDI in the region would be beneficial for farmers and as well as consumers.<br/><br/>Stating that the NDA Government at the Centre has initiated several projects in the region, she further stressed on the need to setup more processing units saying farmers usually suffers and their produces are spoiled due to the absence of processing facilities. According to her, the Union Government wants to create a situation in the country where the produce of the farmers should be processed here and later exported to different countries.<br/><br/>Earlier, J P Meena, Special Secretary, Ministry of Food Processing Industries urged the North Eastern states including Meghalaya to come forward and avail the schemes and projects of the Ministry. He further said that despite having huge product base, there are not enough infrastructure for post harvest managements as a result of which farmers suffers. Rajya Sabha MP from Shillong, Wansuk Syiem also spoke on the occasion.
