The SAARC countries have decided to set up a network of weather stations to monitor weather pattern across the member states. In the first phase 50 automatic weather stations will be set up in Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. While Afghanistan and Pakistan will be covered in the second phase, Maldives and Srilanka will be covered in the third and final phase. At the meeting of SAARC Environment Ministers held in New Delhi today India also agreed to provide one million dollar grant for the SAARC forestry centre in Thimpu in Bhutan and an additional one million dollar for setting up of coastal zone management centre in Male in Maldives. The SAARC Environment ministers also decided to finalise regional environment treaty to be adopted at the next SAARC summit to be held in Thimpu next year in April. A Natural Disaster Rapid response mechanism will also be finalised at the summit where climate change will be the running thing. It was also decided that SAARC as an entity will make a statement on climate change to speak in one voice at the Copenhagen summit on climate change to be held in December this year. This will be in addition to individual statements by these countries. Annual work shops will also be held to discuss coordinated response to climate change. They have also agreed to cooperate in the area of pollution control, environmental and ecological management of rivers and trans border bio-diversity.
