SAARC leaders meet informally at retreat

On the second day of the 16TH SAARC Summit, leaders from the Eight South Asian Countries met informally at the retreat at SAARC village in Thimphu. AIR correspondent reports that the retreat is considered as one of the most interactive part of the Summit as the heads of state and government discuss open agendas. Later, in the afternoon, the Summit is expected to adopt a Declaration entitled-Towards a Green and Happy South Asia, and a separate Ministerial Declaration on Climate Change. Two important SAARC Agreements, on Environment and Trade in Services, will also be signed later in the day. AIR correspondent reports that the scope of cooperation under the Convention would extend to exchange of best practices and knowledge, capacity building and transfer of eco-friendly technology in a number of areas, including climate change, coastal zone management, wildlife conservation and environmental impact assessment studies.<br/>Earlier, the Foreign Secretary Mrs Nirupma Rao said that in the last few years, particularly since the 14th Summit in New Delhi in April 2007, SAARC has also begun to lay the institutional framework for regional cooperation.<br/>
