S Lanka to field Fonseka as common presidential candidate to challenge Rajapakse

The Democratic Peoples Front (DPF) leader and Tamil Parliamentarian from Colombo district Mano Ganeshan, in an exclusive interaction with AIR/DD said that his party has kept its ‘option open regarding their support to Fonseka or fielding a common Tamil candidate’.

He said that the polit bureau of his party will continue discussions with United National Front (UNF), Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and up country parties and announce the decision on 3rd of December.

Mano Ganeshan was however, clear in one aspect that his party will campaign to defeat the present government led by President Mahinda Rajapaksa. This is the first time that the idea of a common Tamil candidate has been mooted by a minority party.

Meanwhile, the Mangala Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP-M) Wing led by Mangala Samaraweera today endorsed the former Army Chief Sarath Fonseka as their common candidate for the forthcoming Presidential Elections. Fonseka was unanimously endorsed by the SLFP-M central committee members.

A press statement issued by the Party said that Fonseka’s candidature has been brought about by the support of a coalition of the most democratic leaders of this country who all believe that he has the potential to bring about change. The coalition has a firm belief that once elected President, Fonseka will restore democracy and abolish the executive Presidency.

He statement also said that Sarath Fonseka would free this country from dynastic rule and family corruption and instil democracy. The SLFP-M wing central committee is entirely comprised of former Rajapaksa supporters who were instrumental in his Presidential victory during the 2005 election.
