S Lanka restores decision to issue Visa on arrival

Within hours after the announcement on revoking of on arrival visa facility to citizens of 79 countries including India, the Sri Lanka Government today formally notified that the decision be treated as withdrawn until further notice.A public notice by the Department of the Immigration and Emigration says that the earlier public notice on “Withdrawal of On Arrival Visa Facility” be treated as withdrawn until further notice. On Friday, the Sri Lankan government has decided to suspend the on arrival tourist visa facility extended to citizens of 79 countries with effect from 30th of September 2010.A public notice by the Department of the Immigration and Emigration had said that under the move tourists arriving to Sri Lanka from all over the world except Singapore and Maldives will be required to obtain visas from the department of immigration and emigration in Colombo or from the Sri Lankan missions abroad before their arrival in Sri Lanka.It said that Sri Lanka however is willing to offer visas on arrival to facility to any country on a reciprocal basis. According to immigration officials, so far only Singapore and Maldives offers visas on arrival for Sri Lankan citizens.Tourism industry officials maintained that the move could severely affect the tourism industry in Sri Lanka, which had started picking up since the end of the war.
