S. Korea accepts North's volcano research offer

South Korea has accepted a proposal from North Korea to hold talks on a possible joint scientific survey of volcanic activity on the Korean peninsula's highest mountain. In a statement today, South Korea's Unification Ministry says it has sent a message to Pyongyang, proposing to hold the meeting in one week in the South Korean border city of Munsan. North Korea first proposed earlier this month to conduct the joint survey on Mount Paekdu, located along North Korea's border with China. The talks offer a chance to ease tensions between North and South Korea. The South has accused the communist North of sinking one of its warships a year ago, and remains angry over the North's deadly artillery attack on a border island in November.
