Rwandans are going to the polls today to elect a president, with the second such election since the 1994 genocide in which eight lakh people were murdered. The killing was ended by the intervention of a rebel force led by Paul Kagame. He is still in charge of the country and is expected to be re-elected by a large margin. Mr. Kagame's supporters say he has brought both stability and steady economic growth since the country's genocide in 1994. His critics accuse him of suppressing opposition and undermining democracy. Mr Kagame faces three rivals in today's election, all with links to the president's all-powerful Rwandan Patriotic Front.
