Russia will remain a key defence partner: PM Dr Manmohan Singh

The Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has expressed the hope that road map on civil nuclear cooperation that was signed in 2010 will be fully implemented by both countries.

Making a statement following 14th India Russia Annual Summit at Moscow this evening Dr Singh said that their officials have been directed to resolve all outstanding issues as the earliest.

He said that Russia will remain a key defence partner and this cooperation in defence move into a stage of joint design, development and production of key defence platforms.

He expressed satisfaction over the progress in bilateral cooperation in defence, energy, high technology trade, investment, space, science education, culture and tourism.

He said that the two countries have resolved to promote investments and facilitate closure cooperation in a number of areas with great potential such as oil and gas, energy, information technology, telecommunications pharmaceuticals, chemicals, fertilizers and mining.

The Prime Minister thanked the Russian President Putin for being instrumental in promoting and strengthening the Indo Russian partnership.

Summit talks between India and Russia were held this afternoon.The Russian President Vladimir Putin said in his opening remarks that India is Russia's strategic partner and both the countries are also developing their economic relationship. He said both are having cooperation in different areas, including in military and technical areas.

While welcoming the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh at Great Kremlin Palace, Mr Putin said that most of mutual achievements have been achieved under his leadership. He said at present both are having a joint counter terrorism exercise in India and also having cooperation in political areas. The President added that both the countries are working together at different international fora including the UN and BRICS.
