Russia says, its warships in the Mediterranean Sea have fired four cruise missiles at the Islamic State group's positions in Syria. The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement in Moscow that the missiles targeted IS positions in the ancient city of Palmyra. The ministry said Russia had notified the US, Turkey and Israel before the strike.<br/><br/>Russia has been conducting a bombing campaign since 2015 in support of President Bashar al-Assad and has a naval contingent deployed to the eastern Mediterranean to bolster its firepower.
