Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Wednesday said his country would not participate in military operations in Libya but would abide by resolutions made by the U.N. Security Council. In a meeting with top Russian military officials, Mr. Medvedev said he will proceed from this standpoint in pursuing their foreign policy or making domestic decisions while implementing the earlier decisions by the U.N. Security Council. Mr. Medvedev said Russia assumes that a number of ongoing conflicts should be settled peacefully, without the participation of troops, and on a basis of international mediation. Meanwhile, the president also warned of a trend in modern regional conflicts. Earlier in the day, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also repeated a call for western participants in military operations in Libya to comply with U.N. Security Council Resolution 1973.
