The rupee depreciated by 40 paise to 50 rupees 70 paise against the US dollar in early trade today on persistent dollar demand from banks and importers in view of firmness of the American currency overseas. The domestic currency had closed 18 paise lower at 50 rupees 31 paise per dollar in yesterday's trade.
