The rupee today weakened 23 paise to close at 74 rupees and 56 paise against the U.S. dollar. The rupee fell amid strengthening in the US currency.

The dollar index, which indicates the US dollar's strength against a basket of six other leading currencies, hit three month highs to trade at 92.37 in intra-day trade.
