Rupee tumbled against the dollar, but the domestic stock markets rebounded strongly after an early battering. At the forex market, the rupee tumbled 68 paise, or one percent, to close at a nearly eight-week low of 66.44 against the dollar. At the stock markets, the Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange staged a smart but partial recovery from huge initial losses, to end with a loss of 144 points, at an over one-month low of 26,121. In early trade, the Sensex had plummeted over 600 points, to slip well below the 26,000-mark. The Nifty at the National Stock Exchange fell 39 points, to 7,915. And gold gained Rs 120, to Rs 26,230 per ten grams in Delhi.
