The rupee recovered some of the initial losses in late morning deals, but was still down 8 paise at 55 rupees 77 paise against the dollar on demand for the American currency from banks and importers. In yesterday's session, the domestic currency had lost 19 paise to close at 55 rupees 69 paise against the dollar on heavy month-end dollar demand from oil importers and a weak trend in equities.
