The rupee failed to maintain its initial gains today and slipped 7 paise to 57 rupees, 8 paise against the dollar on fresh demand for the American currency from banks and importers. The domestic currency resumed stronger at 56 rupees 90 paise per dollar as against yesterday's closing level of 57 rupees 01 paise, on selling of dollars by banks in view of some steps taken by the Reserve Bank of India.
