The rupee strengthened by nine paise to close at 73 rupees and 24 paise against the US dollar.

The domestic unit logged appreciation supported by positive domestic equities and weak American currency.  This is the second consecutive session of gain for the rupee.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.05 per cent to 93.57.
