Rupee tumbled 36 paise, to a new record closing low of 55.39 against the dollar. It also touched an all-time intra-day low of 55.47 per dollar, on relentless demand for the greenback from importers, especially oil refiners, even as foreign fund inflows remained muted. The rupee has lost over 11 per cent against the dollar since March this year.
