The Indian rupee failed to maintain its initial gains and slipped five paise to 44.48 against the American currency in the morning trade on mild dollar demand from banks.At the Interbank Foreign Exchange market, the domestic unit resumed higher at 44.36 per dollar, as against the last weekend's close of 44.44 per dollar.However, it declined immediately to 44.48 per dollar on some dollar demand from importers.
