Rupee failed to maintain initial gains against the US dollar and stood at 54 rupees 53 paise on the back of renewed dollar demand from banks. Earlier, the Indian currency had risen by 14 paise to 54 rupees 40 paise against the dollar in early trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market on continued selling of the US currency by exporters and banks.
