The rupee depreciated by 12 paise to 51.90 rupees against the American currency on the Interbank Foreign Exchange in early trade today. Forex dealers said, besides dollar's gains against other Asian currencies, increased demand for the American currency from importers also put pressure on the local unit but a higher opening in equities capped the losses.
