The rupee today appreciated 36 paise to close at 74 rupees and 39 paise against the US dollar. The domestic unit strengthened mainly due to a surge in domestic equity markets and weakness in the American currency.
 
The dollar index, which indicates the US dollar's strength against a basket of six other leading currencies, declined 0.57 percent to 92.87 in intraday deals.
