Ruling National Conference – Congress Alliance sweeps legislative polls in J&K

The ruling National Conference – Congress Alliance has swept the legislative council elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The colation won all the four seats from panchayat quota . The elections to the four seats were held on 3rd of this month. National Conference candidate Dr. Shehnaz Ganai defeated her nearest PDP rival Ved Prakash Gupta by a margin of 6917 votes in Jammu region and Congress candidate Shyamlal Bhagat defeated Gurmeet Bajwa of PDP by over 7000 votes in Jammu region.

In Kashmir , National Conference candidate Ali Mohammad Dar defeated Peoples Democratic Party candidate Pir Mohammad Hussain by margin of 2565 votes while as Congress candidate Ghulam Nabi Monga defeated the PDP contestant Yasir Reshi by 3000 votes.
AIR Correspondent reports that the council elections to reserve seats for panchayats were held after a gap of 38 years. National Conference and Congress alliance partners in the Government fielded two candidates each. The opposition including PDP and Panther's Party had their candidates in all the four seats.
