RS to continue impeachment proceedings against Justice Sen

The impeachment proceedings against Justice Soumitra Sen of the Calcutta High Court will continue today in Rajya Sabha. The proceedings were initiated against him Wednesday in the upper house on two grounds of misconduct. The charges include misappropriation of large sums of money, which he received in his capacity as receiver appointed by the Calcutta High Court as a lawyer in 1984 and misrepresentation of facts with regard to the misappropriation of money before the court. The motion for the removal of Justice Sen was moved in the house by Mr Sitaram Yechury and Mr Prasanta Chatterjee of CPIM and Mr Arun Jaitley of the BJP Wednesday. A total of 58 members of Parliament from Rajya Sabha had represented for removal of Justice Sen from his office. Defending the impeachment proceedings, Justice Soumitra Sen, who was brought to the bar of the house, pleaded innocence on all counts of charges. Following the conclusion of Justice Sen's arguments in his defence, the Chairman, Mohammed Hamid Ansari, ordered him to withdraw from the bar.
