The Rajya Sabha has taken up discussion on the working of the Health and Family Welfare ministry. Initiating the discussion, Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad claimed that the health sector had witnessed notable improvements during UPA I and II regimes.

He said, the UPA had given special focus to infrastructure, hospitals, human resource management and availability of vaccines produced by public sector companies. Mr Azad, the NDA government is now claiming the credit for high achievements in the field of immunization.

But the foundation for it was laid by the UPA regime. Mr Azad said, the Congress government had initiated maternal child tracking system in 2011 because of which the status of immunization could be monitored centrally. The former health minister wanted to know the status of all health schemes, which were nearing completion at the end of UPA regime.

Rangasayee Ramakrishna of the BJP said the budgetary allocation of one-point-one-per cent is in the direction of raising it to the level of two-point-five-per cent of GDP as envisaged under Draft National Health Policy. He said, the main challenge before the health ministry today is from Cardio Vascular Diseases, Chronic respiratory diseases and cancer.

He said, preventive care and early diagnosis of diseases have taken a backseat. He said, marriages should be fixed on the basis of DNA matching rather than tallying horoscopes. He also advocated creation of awareness about human anatomy and self diagnosis. The discussion is continuing.
