The Rajya Sabha today resumed its normal function after ending the four-day long impasse over objectionable remarks of Union Minister Niranjan Jyoti. The House took up the listed business after acknowledging the statement that Prime Minister Narendra Modi made last week on the issue.
The House functioned smoothly in the post-lunch session. It sat till late in the evening to clear the Legislative business scheduled for the day. The Upper House passed the Textile Undertakings (Amendment) Bill after a threadbare discussion. Two bills pending since long time were also withdrawn. Chairman Mohammad Hamid Ansari made an announcement to this effect when the house reassembled this afternoon following three adjournments.
While acknowledging the statement by the Prime Minister, he said the house appeals to all members of Parliament, ministers and leaders of all parties to maintain civility in all public discourses for successful functioning of parliamentary democracy and uphold commitment to constitutional values. Earlier, the Chairman held consultations with the Government and the floor leaders of all parties to resolve the logjam.
