RS initiates impeachment proceedings against Justice Soumitra Sen for misconduct

The opposition parties in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday strongly demanded an effective Lok Pal Bill to deal with corruption in the country. Participating in the discussion on the Prime Minister's statement on the arrest and release of social activist Mr Anna Hazare, several leaders said although they were not in agreement with Mr Hazare's version of Lok Pal Bill, they wished that he should have been allowed to go ahead with his protest. Mr Gurudas Dasgupta of the CPI termed the Prime Minister's statement as an attempt to cover up the facts. Mr Basudev Acharia of the CPM called for an effective Lok Pal Bill demanding that the Prime Minister be brought under its ambit. Mr Lalu Prasad Yadav of the RJD asked the Anna Team to resolve its differences with the government on Lok Pal Bill and cooperate in ensuring that the supremacy of Parliament is maintained. Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party said that the arrest of Mr Hazare was unconstitutional. Mr Sharad Yadav of the JD-U asked the government to allow Anna Hazare to go ahead with his proposed strike. The debate was continuing when reports last came in.
