RS faces adjournment after uproar by Cong MPs over Gujarat temple issue

The issue of Dwarka temple visit of Congress leader Kumari Selja surfaced again in the Rajya Sabha with Congress members continuing to protest against certain remarks made by treasury benches. As soon as the House met at 2 PM, Congress members trooped into the well, shouting slogans against treasury bench members. Amidst noisy scenes, Sitaram Yechury of the CPI(M) said the matter has been unnecessarily dragged.<br/><br/>He suggested to Chair to hold discussions with the Leader of House and Leader of Opposition to resolve the deadlock and start discussion on floods in Tamil Nadu. Agreeing to the suggestion, Deputy Chairman Prof. PJ Kurien adjourned the House for two brief spells. Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhar Abbas Naqvi urged the Chair to expunge the portions related to Dwarka temple and take up discussion on the floods. The House witnessed three adjournments in the pre-lunch session on the issue.

RS faces adjournment after uproar by Cong MPs over Gujarat temple issue

Rajya Sabha was adjourned thrice till 2 PM today following uproar over Leader of the House Arun Jaitley's clarification on Congress leader Kumari Selja's remarks that she was asked about her caste in a Gujarat temple. Mr Jaitley clarified that Ms. Selja had visited the temple on 22nd of February 2013. <br/><br/>He, however, said no body in the temple had enquired about her caste. Power Minister Piyush Goel said Ms. Selja's observation was manufactured. This led to furore and women members, led by Ms. Selja trooped into the well shouting slogans. The House was adjourned first for ten minutes, then till noon and later till 2 PM.
