The Rajya Sabha was adjourned twice today following noisy scenes with the opposition taking serious exception to an order issued by Income Tax department to Gujarat government seeking information on MoUs signed by the state. There was heated exchange of words between opposition and treasury benches when the issue was raised by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Arun Jaitley as soon as the House met for the day. Mr Jaitley said the communication issued on the 17th of last month also sought details from the state government on the number of investors, both private and foreign companies. He said it was a huge assault on the country's federal character. Mr Jaitley alleged that every opposition-ruled state in the country has been complaining of discrimination by the Centre. He said the country should be proud of the vibrant Gujarat state, which had signed MoUs worth 21.5 lakh crore rupees. The Leader of Opposition demanded action against the concerned officer for dereliction of duties. The House was first adjourned for ten minutes till 11.20 hours on the issue with BJP members trooping into the well. The same was the situation when the House reassembled. This time, the opposition also refused to listen to the Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Mr Pawan Kumar Bansal.Senior BJP leader, Mr Venkaiah Niadu demanded a statement either by the Finance Minister or the Prime Minister saying this is the only solution. As there was no let up in the situation, the Deputy Chairman Mr K Rahaman Khan adjourned the House till Noon.
