RS adjourned for day on religious conversion issue

The Rajya Sabha could not transact any legislative business for the second day today with the opposition continuously insisting on Prime Minister’s statement on the religious conversions.

The House witnessed five adjournments throughout the day before adjourning finally for the day. Opposition and treasury bench members were seen engaged in heated arguments every time the House re-assembled. Anand Sharma of the Congress alleged that the government is not allowing opposition to raise its voice.

Responding to this, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said that the government is ready for a discussion on the issue and will reply every question it raises. Taking note of the situation Deputy Chairman P J Kurien asked members from both sides not to violate the tradition of not disturbing the Leader of the House and the Leader of Opposition while speaking in the House. As noisy scenes continued, Mr Kurien adjourned the House till tomorrow.
