Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has announced a package of Rs 300 crore for the farmers of the state. Addressing a press conference at Chandigarh, Badal said that this bonus was being given to the farmers because last year they had to raise their crops by making extra expenditure on running of tube wells in the face of insufficient rain. He said that Rs 150 crore would be distributed as bonus to the farmers along with the payment for this paddy season while remaining Rs 150 crore would be distributed during the next two crops. The method in which this money is to be distributed will be decided by the Government soon. The Chief Minister made it clear that Rs 800 crore, which was provided by the Centre to the state would be given to Electricity Department of the state because extra power was purchased to run the tube wells. Farmers of the state had started agitation for bonus and a farmer leader was sitting on fast in support of bonus demand. Farmers ended their dharna after the announcement of bonus.
