ROMA deport: Protests in France

Protests against the French Government policy of deporting ROMA people are expected across much of France later today. Anti-racism groups and another opposed to the policy—who saw nearly a thousand ROMA people return to Romania and Bulgaria last month—are planning demonstrations. There has been strong criticism of the deportations. Reports say that some 30,000 people are expected in the capital to march in solidarity with the ROMA gypsies. The expulsions have drawn criticisms from the Vatican and the UN agency. French President Sarkozy has also faced dissent within his Cabinet.
