Robert Gates arrives in Delhi, Afghan security high on agenda

Expanding defence cooperation, regional security and situation in Afghanistan will be high on the agenda of talks between the visiting US Defence Secretary, Robert Gates with Indian leaders. <br/><br/>He arrived in Delhi this afternoon on a three day visit. He will hold discussions with the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, besides the Defence and the External Affairs Minister on further strengthening the defence cooperation in the light of common threats facing the two democracies. <br/><br/>The two countries will also discuss strengthening the military to military cooperation and sharing technology and increasing two-way information flow to effectively deal with security issues including terrorism. Growing defence trade with New Delhi will also hog the limelight in the discussions. <br/><br/>New Delhi recently decided to buy transport aircraft and other military equipments from the US. India bought 3.5 billion worth US weaponry in 2008. The visiting dignitary is likely to explore the possibility of enhancing India's role in promoting security in Afghanistan. Mr. Robert Gates visited India in February last year.
