Amidst protest and rejection of the UN Experts’ Panel report which urged a probe into alleged war crimes committed during the fight against LTTE, a top U.S. State department official, Robert Blake is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka tomorrow on a three day visit. During his stay , U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Robert O. Blake Jr. is scheduled to meet with government officials, civil society representatives, and political leaders. He is also expected to discuss the ‘accountability’ issue as reflected in the UN Experts’ Panel Report with the Sri Lankan government. Colombo has rejected the report as ‘flawed and biased’. Robert Blake is slated to visit USAID-supported programmes and meet local leaders in the war torn areas of Kilinochchi and Mullaithivu as well. Blake was initially scheduled to visit Sri Lanka several weeks earlier before the panel report was published, but had to postpone his trip following a request by the Sri Lankan government.The US State Department last week stated that Blake will travel to Maldives and Sri Lanka from April 30-May 5, 2011 . Robert Blake served as the U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lankan between 2006 and 2009.
