Road Safety Week concludes

Road Safety Week concluded today after a week-long road-safety awareness campaign throughout the country. The week is observed during the first seven days of January every year, with various institutions, organisations and NGO-s conducting special training campaigns for vehicle drivers and other road users to follow road-safety rules and traffic signals. Underlining the need to avert road accidents in which about 1 lakh 30 thousand fatalities are reported every year in India alone, the United Nations has declared this as the Road Safety Decade in order to minimise the number of road-accidents throughout the world.Addressing a function marking the end of the 27th Road Safety Week in New Delhi today, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Mr. Kamal Nath said that road safety is a complex and a challenging issue which requires an integrated effort by the other departments and stake-holders, as the country not only needs world class safety standards in road transport but also a world class road engineering to complement the safety efforts. Mr. Kamal Nath also gave away Transport Ministry's Trophy and cash awards for the years 2007-08 and 2008-09 to various state transport organisations for observing the road safety measures effectively.
