Sixteen people have been killed and 23 others injured in an accident on an expressway in central China. State media said the accident occurred in the early hours today near Xuchang city in the central province of Henan. Six of the injured are in a serious condition. China's roads are among the most dangerous in the world, with traffic laws widely flouted. Nearly 70,000 people died in road accidents in 2009, or around 190 fatalities a day, according to police statistics.
