Rly Minister strongly denies opposition charge of privatising railways

The Railway Minister, Mrs. Mamata Banerjee today strongly denied the opposition charge of privatizing the railways in the country. Replying to the debate on the rail budget in the Rajya Sabha, Ms. Banerjee ruled out such a possibility. She, however, said that the ministry is resorting to commercial use of land and business to generate revenue through public private partnership mode.<br/><br/>Referring to the Vision 2020 unveiled in the rail budget, Ms. Banerjee said that this will lay down strong foundation for the future development of rail network and infrastructure in the country. Ms Banerjee said that the Railway loses as much as 40 per cent of its business due to Bandhs. Saying that the Railway Ministry has kept most of its commitments made during the last Budget, Ms Banerjee said that all promises made in the current Budget will be fulfilled before the end of next fiscal.<br/><br/>Talking about the changes being planned for the Railway Ms Banerjee said that innovative practices like selling of railway tickets through mobile vans will also be undertaken. She also stressed to increase vigilance to stop corrupt practices within the system. The Appropriation Bill was later returned with voice vote.<br/><br/>Earlier participating in the debate, opposition BJP and CPI-M dubbed the Railway Budget as imaginary and a document of dreams. They alleged that there was no allocation for completion of various railway proposals in it. Participating in the discussion, Shyamal Chakraborty CPI-M said though an impression has been created that the Railway budget has given too much to West Bengal, there was nothing in reality. Describing the budget as unrealistic and a document of dreams, Vijay Kumar Rupani of BJP said with fuel price hike, railway's profit pegged at Rs 9,782 crore will come down and sought to know from where money will come for new proposals.
