RJD President Lalu Prasad faces the possibility of disqualification as an MP after being convicted in a case related to fodder scam. The RJD Chief was sent to Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi today, soon after a Special CBI Court of Ranchi held him guilty along with 44 other accused including former Chief Minister of Bihar, Dr. Jaganath Mishra and sitting JDU MP from Jahanabad, Jagadish Sharma.
The quantum of punishment will be pronounced on 3rd October through video conferencing, for which argument would be held tomorrow.
AIR Ranchi Correspondent reports that the present case relates to illegal withdrawal of nearly 38 crores rupees from Chaibasa government treasury. Among those convicted today, eight have been sentenced from one year to three years of imprisonment along with fine of 50 thousand to 50 lakh rupees.
These eight include former state Minister Vidya Sagar Nishad and former BJP MLA, Dhurv Bhagat, one IAS officer and five suppliers. Mr. Lalu Prasad is accused in five other cases of Fodder Scam which occurred in undivided Bihar during the first seven years of 1990s. The possibility of disqualification as MP arise in the wake of a recent Supreme Court judgment striking down a provision in the electoral law that deferred immediate disqualification of lawmakers on conviction.
Meanwhile, Lalu Prasad's son, Tejaswi Yadav has said that an appeal against today's judgement will be filed in the Jharkhand High Court
