The Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council (PMEAC) Chairman Dr C Rangarajan on Thursday said that the rising food prices must be checked as they have a tendency to lead to manufacturing inflation. Talking to reporters in New Delhi, Dr Rangarajan said that this calls for monetary action especially on the supply side management. He said that although there is 5.3 million hectare reduction in the total area sown in the current year due to the failure of monsoon, there are expectations that the Rabi (winter) crop will be good and the economic growth in current fiscal will be about 7 per cent. The PMEAC has also forecast a growth of 7 to 8 per cent in 2010-11 but said that the world economy as a whole has to pick up in order to reach a growth rate of 9 per cent.
