‘Rising food prices hog limelight in Lok Sabha

The opposition BJP on Wednesday charged the government of alleged failure in checking rising food prices. Initiating a debate on price rise in the Lok Sabha, Senior BJP leader and former Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha said despite recommendations by the Standing Committee on food in 2009, no concrete step has been taken to prepare a comprehensive food pricing and management policy. Describing the high inflation as the worst kind of tax for the poor, Mr. Sinha said that it is important to take effective steps to deal with this issue. He said despite several discussions on the price rise in the House, the prices continue to rise, making the life of common man difficult. Mr. Sinha expressed hope that after the ongoing discussion, government will take effective measures so that the burden of price rise does not effect common man. Initiating the debate he moved a resolution expressing deep concern over price rise. The resolution also urged the government to take effective steps to check inflation that will give relief to the common man. The debate is continuing.The normal business in the Lok Sabha resumed Wednesday morning after opposition and the government decided to hold a discussion on price rise under a Rule which entails voting. They also decided that the House will adopt a unanimous resolution on the issue at the end of the debate.Participating in the debate Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid said that India cannot remain insulated from the global effect. He said allegations and counter allegations will not solve the problem. Khurshid said government has taken all possible steps to tackle inflation. He said Inflation situation in India is much better than many other countries.In the continued discussion on price rise in the Lok Sabha, the Law Minister, Mr. Salman Khurshid enumerated the steps taken by the government to contain inflation. He said, inflation is not only a problem of India but also of the entire world. Even the Unite States is now struggling to repay its mounting burden of debt. He said no doubt India is facing inflation but it has been able to keep it under check. This is an achievement, said Mr. Khurshid. The discussion was continuing when reports last came in.
