Rio+20 draft declaration reaffirms commitments to phase out harmful fossil fuel subsidies

The Rio+20 draft declaration reaffirms commitments by countries to phase out harmful and inefficient fossil fuel subsidies that encourage wasteful consumption and undermine sustainable development. Negotiators worked overnight to give final touches to the draft text, which will be then sent to the leaders for their approval.

AIR correspondent covering the summit reports that the draft text proposes launching a process to agree on sustainable development goals, or SDGs.These are likely to build on and overlap with a current round of objectives known as the millennium development goals.
