Rio Olympics: Sania-Bopanna advance to Mixed Doubles quarterfinals; Indian eves lose to US 0-3 in Hockey

In Rio Olympics, Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna have advanced to the Mixed Doubles quarterfinals. The pair defeated the Australian duo of Samantha Stosur and John Peers in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4 in the opening round to book a place in the last-8.Sania, with Prarthana Thombare, and Bopanna, with Leander Paes, had made an exit from the Games in the opening round.Bad news came from Hockey as the Indian Women's team's hopes of entering the quarterfinal weakened further. The Indian eves, who made a return to the Olympic fold after 36 years, lost to the US, 0-3 to record their 3rd defeat in 4 group games. Earlier in the day, the Men's team lost to the Netherlands, 1-2 in their group match. Despite the defeat they entered the last eight stage.In Badminton, Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu made winning starts. They registered easy victories in the opening group games. In the Doubles, however, the pairs of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa and Mannu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy bowed out.In Archery, India's challenge in the Women's Individual Recurve event came to an end after Deepika Kumari and Bombayla Devi lost their pre-quarterfinal matches. Atanu Das is now the only Indian left in the Singles Recurve.The Indian Boxing contingent witnessed its first loss as Shiva Thapa made an exit from the first round of the 56kg weight class. Vikas Krishan and Manoj Kumar, who earlier advanced to the pre-quarterfinals in their respective weight categories, are the only two pugilists remaining for India. The United States currently leads the medals tally, with China second and Japan third.
