Rio Olympics: Lalita Babar qualifies for women's 3000m steeplechase final

At the Rio Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Lalita Babar today qualified for the women's 3000 metre steeplechase final after finishing fourth in the qualifying heat 2 with a national record time. Lalita finished with the seventh-best time clocing 9 minutes, 19.76 seconds. The top three in the three heats gained automatic qualification while Lalita, made the grade as one of the six fastest from among the rest.Lalita will be seen in the final of the gruelling race onAugust 15. However, another Indian participant in the same race, Sudha Singh was eliminated after finishing a distant 9th in heat 2. In the Men's 25 metre rapid fire pistol event, Gurpreet Singh failed to qualify for the finals by 2 points. In Women's hockey, the Indian team ended their campaign today, after suffering a humiliating 0-5 loss against higher-ranked Argentina in their final Pool B fixture. In the Mixed Doubles tennis, the duo of Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna will take on the American pair of Venus Williams and Rajeev Ram in the semifinal at 11.30 pm tonight. If Sania and Bopanna win the match, they will be assured of at least a silver and if they lose, they will still play for the bronze-medal match.
