With just a day left for the 31st Summer Olympics to begin in Rio de Janiero, arrangements are being given its final touches. The opening ceremony of the keenly-awaited event will be held on Saturday at 4:30 AM Indian Time.Nearly 11,000 athletes from 205 countries will take part in the 17-day extravaganza featuring 306 events in 42 sport disciplines. India is fielding its biggest contingent with almost 120 athletes. Here's a report from our correspondent on India's performance at the Games, so far. Albeit their debut came at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, Indian athletes have appeared in every edition of the Summer Olympics since 1920. Norman Pritchard, a Briton born in India, became the first athlete from India to win an Olympic medal in the 1900 Games. He won two silver medals. India won its first Gold in 1928 Amsterdam Games in Field Hockey which began a run of six successive yellow metals in the Sport.Of India's overall 9 Gold, 6 Silver and 11 Bronze, Hockey has got us 8 Gold, 1 Silver and 2 Bronze. Other than Hockey, Wrestler KD Jadhav's Bronze in 1952 Helsinki Games, Leander Paes's third place at Atlanta in 1996, Weightlifter Karnam Malleswari's Bronze in 2000 Sydney Games, Col. Rajyawardhan Rathore's Silver in Shooting at Athens in 2004 were India's medal winning performances from 1952 to 2004. 2008 Beijing Games saw India win a Gold after 28 years through Shooter Abhinav Bindra, India's flag bearer this time. In Beijing, India also got its first medal in Boxing through Vijender Singh. Wrestler Sushil Kumar, who is not a part of Rio, had also won a Bronze then. At the last Olympics in London, India bagged 2 Silver and 4 Bronze. Shooters Vijay Kumar and Gagan Narang won a Silver and Bronze, with Sushil Kumar taking the Silver and Saina Nehwal, Mary Kom and Yogeshwar Dutt claiming a Bronze each.
