Rio 2016 Olympics: Disappointing opening day for India

India had a rather disappointing opening day at the 31st Summer Olympics. The Men's Hockey team's opening group match win and Rower Dattu Bhokanal's entry into the quarterfinals were some moments to cheer for the Indian fans. But, it was the early round exit of Sania Mirza and Leander Paes, Jitu Rai failing to give India its first medal, and the end of Table Tennis Singles campaign that dominated the first day.The Indian Men's Hockey team defeated Ireland 3-2 in their opening Group-B match courtesy VR Raghunath's opening goal and a brace from Rupinder Pal Singh. In Rowing, Dattu Bhokanal advanced to the quarterfinals of Men's Single Sculls after finishing 15th in the heats with a timing of 7 minutes and 21.67 seconds.Indian shooters failed to live up to the expectations as besides Jitu Rai, none put up a fight. In the Men's 10-metre Air Pistol category, Jitu made it to the Finals but could not win a medal. Gurpreet Singh could not even clear the Qualification hurdle. In the Women's 10-metre Air Rifle event, Ayonika Paul and Apurvi Chandela failed to clear the Qualification round. In Tennis, veteran Leander Paes' hopes of winning his second Olympic medal were dashed after he made a heart-breaking exit in Men's Doubles opening round with team-mate Rohan Bopanna. Sania Mirza and Prarthana Thombare also crashed out in the opening round. In the Singles, 4-time Gold medalist Venus Williams made a first round exit.In Table Tennis, India's Singles campaign ended as paddlers Manika Batra, Mouma Das, Soumyajit Ghosh and Achanta Sharath Kamal bowed out in the first round.Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu also failed to make a mark in the Women's 48 kg category.Meanwhile, Brazilian military carried out a controlled explosion near the Copacabana finish line in men's road cycling race event after they found a bag. Military bomb disposal experts were at the scene of the explosion and kept crowds away.
